No, no, it's okay! [She tries to assure him, waving her hands in front of her.] It's really okay, I swear. Honestly, I'm surprised my first time cooking with alien ingredients was even edible. They didn't even label what anything was, so I sort of had to make it up as I went!
Oh, a bunch! My best is probably my yakisoba--my Niceoodles-- but nothing beats my dad's cooking. [She says, a tinge of wistfulness creeping into her voice.]
I don't know a lot about American food, but I'd be happy to learn! I'm sure that once I get more familiar with these ingredients I'll be able to whip up something like what we had back at home! Er, more or less.
Spaghetti and meatballs is basically just another kind of noodle dish, right?
That sounds pretty easy! I'm sure I could whip something together when I've got a chance to stock up on ingredients! There's gotta be something that tastes like tomatoes on this planet.
[Hopefully.]
I learned to cook from both my parents! But my dad was the one who had all the really interesting recipes. He's a ship captain so he's always traveling, and I guess he always liked learning about food from the different places he went.
Well if you ever need a guy to do a little taste-testing for you, I'm willing to volunteer.
[ Does he have any idea whatsoever he's getting himself into? Nah. But Steve's all about that #YOLO life. Or, maybe, he just really, really misses spaghetti and meatballs right now. ]
I've never really had much of a chance to eat while abroad back home - [ And now, he may likely never have that chance either. ] - guess I'll have to make more of an effort this time.
Great! I'll be sure to look you up! [The good news is that she's actually a pretty good cook? So if there's anything noxious that comes out of it, it probably mostly won't be intentional.]
I haven't done a lot of traveling yet, so eating tasty stuff from all over is kind of as close as I get!
[ Some might have called it a perk. Steve isn't sure what he calls it anymore, especially when that job of his doesn't even, technically, exist anymore.
(And even if it did, well. He can't exactly call himself an Avenger either. Ex-Avenger, sure. War criminal more likely.
#yikes) ]
Or it did. Guess we're all doing a little rewriting of our histories now.
[ He exhales. ]
Anyway, you know they do say that you could travel the world through food. Nothing gives you more of an experience of the culture than the things people eat.
That's true! You can learn a lot about a place from the sort of food they eat! Like in Japan, since we're an island country a bunch of our dishes have fish in them.
[She looks back up at the stars.] I wonder what sort of food they have here. You think it'll be a lot different from back on Earth?
I'm betting they won't have the burgers and fries that we're used to. [ He's speaking for his own culture's food here, before he adds: ] Or the sushi and ramen either.
[ He finishes up the bowl he'd been offered now that it's gotten a bit on the cold side. It's definitely no burger. ]
There's no telling what kind of food they have here, not without spending some time here. Luckily we've got plenty of that to come.
I wondered the same thing. Whether we could go back.
[ Steve mentioned it once, but he was given to believe that this was a more permanent arrangement, a one-way trip. You could travel away from the Storm, but there wasn't really a way to travel back into it.
He's not sure he's ready to accept that - but it's hard not to try and be a little realistic too. ]
But I'm not sure there'll be a back to return to.
And I'm not sure what the Storm is either, whether it's something we can fight or not.
[ Steve hums a sound of agreement. He'd heard something similar too, and imagine his frustration knowing it's not something he can rightfully defeat the way he's used to. ]
Your guess is as good as mine. But you know what, I agree - there's a reason we're here and whatever that reason is, it should mean something. It should count for something.

Do you have a favorite food, from back home?

[ It makes him a little wistful, thinking of the food he'll probably never get to eat again. Pancakes, sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs.
He smiles. ]
Assuming you're familiar with food from Earth. Better yet, American-Italian food.
What about you? You got a favourite dish?

[ Steve isn't a foodie by any means, but oh, what he wouldn't do for some good ol-fashioned spaghetti and meatballs right now. ]
Did you learn how to cook from your dad?

[She keeps looking up. They're completely unfamiliar to her. It's a little lonely.] Do you think we'll be able to go back soon?
We can't do much to fight the Storm from a campsite.

Well, I'm not gonna give up, I know that much.
I feel like giving up would insult everyone back home, or back up in stasis.

He nods, smiles even, approving. ]
Seems we're both in full agreement, then. Well, I won't give up if you don't.
no subject
And I'll try to learn how to cook spaghetti, too!
wrapped?
It might be the first time he's had any kind of a laugh all night. ]
Sounds like a pretty decent plan.
