[ newt can only nod at steve's thanks for now, distracted as he is by the task at hand. as wave one winds down, just enough for people to begin helping the wounded rather than dodging shrapnel. the second wave will start soon, though all they know is that more is coming.
in the short time they have, newt slips over to check on steve. he visibly hesitates before speaking. then: ]
You were — that was a little incredible. [ he quickly supplies a clarification. ] With the catching.
[ Steve smiles, almost bashful because he still hasn't learned how to take a compliment, and shakes his head.
But he's grateful for the comment. ]
Well, you weren't so bad yourself. [ Honestly, the magic thing isn't something he's used to but it's equally as incredible. ] We made a pretty good team out there.
[ a good team. he doesn't often make a team with anyone, let alone a good team.
after a brief hesitation — ]
I suppose we did. [ the corners of his mouth quirk up, and he offers his hand to steve, even as he wonders if that's the best idea given the abilities recently displayed. ] Newt Scamander. It's a pleasure to, ah, work with you.
He nods, taking the other man's hand to shake. It's a firm, strong handshake befitting of Captain America, but he's got control of his strength. No hands are going to be crushed, don't you worry. ]
