[ Steve can agree with any sentiment that basically states 'weirder than your weirdest dream', and he'd been asleep for seventy-five-ish years, transported from the World War to the modern-day 21st Century.
It's been one hell of an adventure, and Steve doubts that's going to be stopping any time soon. ]
I don't really cry much. But I'm not sure anyone has a "usual" reaction to their whole world being destroyed. Kind of a once-in-a-lifetime thing, really. Right?
[ The world being threatened of complete and utter annihilation seems to be just your regular Tuesday afternoon for Captain America, but that's ... well, it's a threat. It's never actually happened before.
And now that it has, now that it's affected more than just his world ... yeah, you don't see that every day. ]
There are worse reactions anyway. Most of us that I've seen have been handling it pretty calmly, one day at a time.
Not thinking about it too much is probably a wise idea. [ Steve agrees.
As for what he did for a living -- Steve shrugs. It's not like he's going to lie about it or anything. ]
I was a soldier.
[ Of course there's a hell of a lot more to it than that. Captain, leader, hero, superhero, Avenger, ex-Avenger, war criminal ... there are a lot of shoes he's had to wear, a lot of hats he's put on.
At the end of it all however, Steve really does believe he was always just a soldier in war. ]
There's no real lack of work, no. I'm with the Royal Guard at the moment, which - you know, gives me an opportunity to do something I'm familiar with doing.
[ It earns him a little bit of silver and allows him to slowly learn the goings-on around town as well, which isn't something to underestimate when you're a newbie to a place lacking context. ]
[ Steve doesn't know a lick about graduate school. That kind of thing was a pipe dream of a pipe dream for him, the kind that seemed so far off it never really crossed his mind as a possibility.
If he graduated from any kind of school, it was the school of hard knocks. ]
ariadne.
Depends on your definition of 'a while'.
[ Steve's smile is a touch sardonic, but he's still in relatively good spirits anyway, considering. ]
It hasn't been long for me, for the first group who were rescued from the Storm they keep talking about. A couple months, maybe.
So I guess that means you're a new arrival. Welcome.

[ She smiles. ]
Thanks - I guess. It sure is... something, here. Isn't it?
[ By 'something' she mostly means 'even more surreal than the weirdest dream she's ever had'. ]

Are you adjusting okay so far?

[ She frowns a little. ]
I mean, I'm numb. I haven't... cried or anything. Is that weird?
no subject
No. No, it's not weird. Everyone comes to terms with things in their own way, in their own time.
[ He pauses. ]
Unless your usual reaction is to cry about it.

Anyway, I'm finding it easier to just not think about it more than I have to, so... what did you do for a living?

I bet there's plenty for you to do here, then.
[ She assumes. Police, or the military, or... something. ]

[ Hence, the sand castles. ]

[ Yep, he figured.
He gestures to the sand castle that he very nearly crushed. ]
Where did you study?

[ She sounds a little wistful - and why shouldn't she? Boy, she misses Paris sometimes. Her friends, and her family, and her life there. ]
I worked for years to get there. It was my dream school, you know? I was one term away from my MArch.

School in Paris. That sounds pretty incredible.
