I'm not. [ how can anyone really be? ] I'd like to get home too, but since we won't be able to until we reach the anomaly and figure out what's pulling us here, I may as well make the most of it.
( considering how it didn't exactly go over well with tony, thor figures he should probably be upfront with steve about loki being on board. honestly, the only reason he's kept it to himself is selfishness, not wanting to ruin the balance he's fallen into with loki and the other avengers. but steve should know. thor owes him that much. )
Loki's here.
( no preamble, just the truth. )
I know that might make things ... complicated. But rest assured, he's been on good behavior.
( for the most part, anyway (no stabbings have been reported thus far). thor has to make some allowances for loki being the god of mischief, after all. but steve, at least, should know what it means to thor to have loki back after losing him at the hands of thanos. he hasn't exactly told anyone else that little tidbit, not even tony. )
( he's not going to lie to steve. and yet he feels the need to defend his brother anyway. he's always going to be loki's #1 apologist, after all. )
Loki may have relinquished the Tesseract to Thanos, but he died trying to protect me and our people.
( well, what was left of their people. giving up the tesseract ultimately saved asgard from a second extinction. would thanos have spared any of them had the tesseract truly been destroyed on asgard? or would his rage of being denied one of his prizes have doomed them all? )
I understand if you can't forgive him for the damage he did on Earth. I don't expect you to. But we now share a common enemy. You don't have to trust my brother, Steve, but I hope you trust me.
[ There's never been any doubt where Steve and Thor are concerned. The Avengers have been through a lot but Steve had always known that when push comes to shove, Thor was a great ally, someone you wanted to have at your back.
That hasn't changed. ]
And you're right.
Whatever might have happened, our shared enemy is greater now.
I wish it weren't so but when have things ever been easy for us, huh?
[generally speaking, tony likes to handle his problems by avoiding the fuck out of them. (and drinking. drinking is another great option.) but it's been two goddamn years and one of them is going to have to man the hell up eventually. it's a small spaceship - well, not really, but relatively speaking. and, yeah, he's pissed off that he'd had to confront thanos without steve, he's not going to pretend he isn't. but he also misses steve. sometimes it feels like his chest still aches from the blow he took in siberia, from the weight of the shield smashing into his armor, from the emotional blow. tony doesn't have so many friends - real, true friends like he'd thought steve was - that he can lose one without missing it.
so, yeah, after spending a certain amount of time turning the bracelet over in his hands, he finally works up the nerve to actually send a message.]
[ The message comes up with no preamble, just a soft ping! notifying him that someone's reached out over the network. When he leans over to pick up his device, it's ... honestly not a name he expects to see. And boy, the emotional gut-punch it brings has him pausing in his spot.
He's going to need a second.
He's got the other Tony Stark listed under 'T', which can only mean one thing: ]
[Tony still isn't sure this is a good idea, but it's better than spontaneously bumping into Steve in the corridor - less chance of being punched into space that way, for one thing. He sucks in a slow breath between his teeth.]
I'd ask who else it could be, but apparently the answer to that is a younger, taller version of myself.
[Ha, ha. He's a riot.]
PS, your handwriting sucks. Rhodey still hasn't stopped calling me Tony Stank.
[That's- that's definitely not what he expected to hear. Tony's not even sure he deserves that. Steve's practically a war criminal these days, and, well, it's not like they've spoken to each other since Siberia. Since he tried to kill Barnes and Steve almost put his shield through his chest.
(He regrets taking the shield now. It had been a mistake in the heat of the moment, and if he could, he'd give it back. Nobody deserves it more than Steve. He knows that.)
Tony hesitates for a long moment. He's not sure what to say next.]
Yeah, same.
[He starts to type 'I wasn't sure you'd reply', then thinks better of it.]
I kept the phone with me. In case I ever needed it.
[ Maybe Steve's had some time to think about ... everything that happened.
And, honestly, at the end of it all, he does place the onus on himself. Everything he'd written to Tony was the truth, it'd been sincere. Steve reached out because he'd wanted to extend the olive branch for doing something he thought was right but wound up being hurtful instead. Bucky is his oldest friend, but that doesn't mean Tony wasn't his friend too. ]
I know.
Wasn't expecting to hear Bruce's voice over the speaker though.
He picked it up? I'm glad it survived - actually, I'm not even sure where I dropped it.
[That's not the point, dumbass.]
I meant to be there, but sometimes you end up trying to save a wizard from some aliens, and...you know how it is.
[He really had wanted to face down Thanos with Steve. Even after everything, the thought of having the other man at his side in a fight is...reassuring, somehow. Maybe it's all those childhood dreams of fighting evil with Captain America, or maybe it's just because Steve's his friend, one of the few people he...well, he'd thought he could trust. Still does trust, even in spite of everything.]
